Poetics of Space - In the Sun
Sunlight is a key element of photography, and I have found a new love for trying to capture the way sunlight affects a space. A farm on its own has amazing opportunities for great photographs that tell a story of the simple, hardworking life of homesteading. But, with beams of sun rays shining through the fences and open slats of a barn, there is a whole new meaning and beauty added to this farm. Sunlight has been significant in history as a representation of the divine for many cultures. I believe in a divine meaning to light as well. However, I do not believe the sun on its own is something holy or divine, rather I believe in the way it points to my Creator and Savior. In Numbers 6:24-26, there is a blessing that Christians have continued to speak out over each other for millennia.
It says,
"The LORD bless you and keep you;
The LORD make His face shine upon you,
And be gracious to you;
The LORD look upon you with His favor,
And give you peace."
These verses to me are exactly what these photos embody. The sun is not God but it reminds me of God shining his love, protection, provision, grace, and peace down on me. I know it to be true that God also takes care of all the creatures He has created, including these chickens, goats, and all the plants growing around them. His face, his warmth, and love beam down graciously upon every creature, from a humble chicken, to a humble human. The poetry of this space is the reminder and promise of blessings from a God that is love, through and through.
