P4 - Sense of Place
Digital - The Lake
The lake by my home has been a place of privacy and solitude since. Once my family moved out of town, it became a place to get away and enjoy time for myself. Beyond a fisherman here and there, no one goes to the dock. This place, Lake Pelican, is always quiet and calm, with a sense of seclusion. My brother and I drove to the lake one evening, enjoying step away from the world. We were able to, for a time, take in the beautiful nature and wildlife. I love all the little plants and animals, there are so many small moments of beauty. I hoped to capture those little moments, whether it’s a single branch or small bush at the end of the path. It's a reminder for myself that my job as an artist is to observe, to truly see, never miss a miniscule touch of art.
My aunt and uncle’s farmhouse sits about twenty minutes northwest of Aberdeen. They’ve lived there about a decade, growing to a family of six, with about thirty chickens, a handful of ducks, four goats, a dog, and ten farm cats. I enjoy their little farm as it puts into perspective what I’d like to own and work myself. With just their family, they are able to have a nearly endless supply of eggs, plenty of fresh produce, and high-quality meat that they butcher themselves. The images I chose to print show the chickens, ducks, and their somewhat charming rundown and recycled style of farming. The worn look of their farm, to me, shows my family’s ability to use things to their full purpose, never letting things go to waste. Their children are most often eager to help with farm chores, taking care of the chickens and cats, and my aunt and uncle do their fair share of fixing up the barns and caring for the animals and garden. I love the way they are able to live on their little family farm, and spending time there only makes me all the more hopeful for a life like that for myself.
